Park City 2011: Problem Set #9

This problem set closes out two big ideas: finding formulas for the area and incircle radius of a triangle.  It’s all spelled out in today’s problem set.

PCMI 2011 Day 9 (July 15, 2011)

Five more problem sets to go!  Have a great weekend.

Park City 2011: Problem Set #8

A big connection between complex numbers and Pythagorean triples… plus, more bad jokes. Enjoy.

PCMI 2011 Day 8 (July 14, 2011)

Park City 2011: Problem Set #7

Apologies for the late posting of today’s set.  There were some last-minute edits to bad jokes about the US Women’s Soccer team.

PCMI 2011 Day 7 (July 13, 2011)

A brief description of the “salt activity”:

  • Get a big salt dispenser, a box, a paper cup, and a cardboard cutout of a triangle.
  • Put the triangle on the upside-down cup inside the box.  This steadies the triangle.  Make sure it is flat.
  • POUR SALT everywhere until the triangle is completely covered with salt.  More.  Put as much salt as you possibly can on the triangle.
  • Observe.
  • Ideally, do it over again with more different triangles to help understand what is happening.

Park City 2011: Problem Set #6

Things are getting more complex, it seems.

PCMI 2011 Day 6 (July 12, 2011)

If you’re not attending PCMI, “Ning” is a reference to a social networking service used by the conference.

Park City 2011: Problem Set #5

As noted before, it might be best to start with Problem Set #1, but since PCMI has new attendees week-to-week, we try to give a “fresh start” on Monday with a new direction for the course.  Enjoy!

PCMI 2011 Day 5 (July 11, 2011)

And don’t forget to pick up your free Slurpee.  It is 7/11, after all.

Park City 2011: Problem Set #4

It’s Friday… looking forward to the weekend?

Here is today’s PCMI problem set.  At the end of this session, participants were asked to write some things they had learned and some things they were still wondering about, and we’ll post that list here sometime soon.  Enjoy!

PCMI 2011 Day 4 (July 8, 2011)

Park City 2011: Problem Set #3

We are publishing the daily problem sets from the Park City Mathematics Institute’s content course here.  Starting with Problem Set #1 is a good idea!  These problem sets are paced for two hours, not to complete them in two hours!

We apologize if you start singing about the number 12 for no reason.

PCMI 2011 Day 3 (July 7, 2011)

Thanks and pass the word around if you like.  PCMI @ Mathforum contains the archive of previous years’ material.
